Chorokhy Adjaratskali 6-year river basin management plan was presented at the "Sheraton" In Batumi, Georgia. The meeting was organiased by the EU funded porject “Environmental Protection of International Rivers Basins”. One of the specific objectives of the Project is to improve technical capacities by developing river basin management plans (RBMPs) in selected pilot river basins, according to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). One of the selected pilot basins is the Chorokhi-Adjaristskali basin, located in the Adjara Autonomous Republic and covering a significant part of its territory.
The River Basin Management Plan for Chorokhi Adjaristkali River Basin was developed within the framework of the EPIRB Project. Comments on the draft RBMP will be collected by Water Resources Management Service of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia. It is envisaged that the Plan will be finalised and submitted for Government adoption in early September 2015.
What are the threats facing the river Adjaristsqali
Use of the water for generating the hydro-electric puwer, exracting the sand and grave from the basins, discharge of the untreated or inadequately treated wastewater from sewerage systems in the Adjaristskali basin, these are the main factors that negatively affect the quality of the water resources.
