Improving the quality of the water resources is the one of the obligations to be fulfilled by the government of Georgia. Kura River is the most polluted river in Georgia. How the Government of Georgia to fulfill the above mentioned obligation and at which stage is the process at the moment.
The quality of the rivers is very important issue for the country that has unfavorable environmental conditions.
The experts in the field of the water quality and river basin management issues, Mr Zurab Jincharadze and the Director of the NGO EU-Georgia were invited to “Business Morning” at Georgian TV Channel “Maestro” to discuss the above mentioned issues. Mr Jincharadze spoke about the importance of the activities to be undertaken by the government of the Country to fulfilled the obligations undertaken by the Country by the Association Agreement. He underlined the issues related to improving the legislation, water code and its sub-legislative acts. Mr Jincharadze mentioned the EPIRB Project also is working in this field.
On the reporter’s question, regarding the future steps to be undertaken by the government to improve the environment of the Kura River, Mr Jincharadze answered that initially the chemical and ecological status of different segments of Kura River should be determined and then define the short term and long program of measures. Mr Jincharadze spoke about the causes of pollution of Kura River; problems related to the rrainage system, collectors and water purification station in Gardabani, which is not working properly; he underlined importance of adoption and new water code and River Basin Management plan.
