Launching of 15 Monitoring Wells Equipped with Modern Monitoring Equipment in the Prut River Basin

On September 28-29, 2015 the Environmental Protection of International River Basins (EPIRB) project will conduct training and launch the new groundwater monitoring well in the Prut pilot river basin, Republic of Moldova. The above work was implemented as part of the River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) development process through the selected Programme of Measures (PoM) and aimed to assist the Ministry of Environment  of Moldova,  Agency of Geology and Mineral Resources and Hydrogeology Expedition from Moldova  to determine the impact factors on ground water quality of the Prut river basin through implementing pilot project “Refurbishment of the groundwater monitoring network for the assessment of the factors influencing ground water quality in the Prut river basin” .

The “Environmental Protection of International River Basins” (EPIRB) project is an EU-funded project managed by the European Commission and implemented by a consortium led by Hulla & Co “Human Dynamics”. The project aims to reinforce actions in environmental protection and water resources management in the Eastern Partnership countries in terms of cooperation towards the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD –2000/60/EC). The project activities and outcomes are designed to improve the quality of water in selected transboundary river basins through joint water monitoring activities and the development of River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) in selected pilot river basins. The project focuses on the wider Black Sea region and aims to support the beneficiary countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

In the frame of the current pilot activities in Moldova the project helped to purchase and install modern monitoring equipment in the national groundwater monitoring network on 15 wells with modern electronic water level, temperature and conductivity meters and in one monitoring well telemetric station will be installed for the transfer of field measurements to the to the databases of the responsible on groundwater monitoring institution – SE “Hydrogeological Expedition from Moldova” (EhGeoM). The total cost of the pilot project, including designing, purchasing modern equipment, installation of automated equipment, connection to the telemetry and testing, will amount to 29 870 EUR.
The final installation of the equipment and linking to the existing telemetry system, as well as the training of the local specialists of the Hydrogeological Expedition from Moldova and Agency of Geology and Mineral Resources is planned on September 29, 2015, locality Calinesti, Falesti.
Official launching and hand over ceremony will also take place on September 28, 2015 at 14:00, in Chisinau, at the Ministry of Environment of Republic of Moldova, blv.Cosmonautilor,9, bir.603.
